how not to be impressed by the collective key to everything and
elusive Liverpool who plays as well as pop music
contemporary form of aPAtT Orchestra. It is impossible
catalog their music. And all the better because it’s the last thing
they want. They eat up all the racks with genius. To
understand people who have not seen them in concert, one can only
compare their approach with that of other groups. They have fun madness
and sometimes schoolboy Mr Bungle, the thirst for the Mothers of Invention
and intellectual deconstruction of the Residents. They are inspired by all
styles to create music without any limitations. They like
experimentation, but one thing is certain: they pop, in the sense
the broadest and most noble of the term. You’re a bit lost? This is normal,
aPAtT it.
After the first concert in 2009, was invited aPAtT a week
last December for the new project of the aircraft “Be My Guest”: a
residence offered to a group for engaging in actions
teaching, rehearsals with local artists and finally a
concert setting. A true musical exchange, rather than a date in a
long list of concerts in Europe. And when we say “trade”, this
is not in the kind “you have a guitar and a djembe. Come! We will
remake the world that night on the beach “- that, that just deserves a good
splash of napalm – but “we’ll discuss, you will bring what you
can do, I’ll bring what I can do and we will surprise the entire

First step: primary school Alain Decaux Vendeville to save
with sixty students learned a tune by heart. The session will
used for a piece of Christmas which will be available on the website
group by year end. In the afternoon of December 12, the training
played a set for aérokids, a snack-concert where parents can
bring their children and to discover good music to their offspring.
And the set of aPAtT was calibrated for toddlers jumping whoop
in all directions, while being introduced to all possible kinds of
music. After an acoustic show at Wazemmes Modjo, the group

Luminocolor two musicians, three brass choirs and Free Zoon
Crick, male-Sicks Tourcoing. This last meeting is
surely the most unlikely, very serious Crick-Sick as usual

evidenced after a rehearsal of his baritone voice: “First they refused
the project, but our leader has found that it could be interesting for
another public meeting. And so he insisted we went there though

Songs. ” All local groups seem to have much fun
qu’aPAtT experience, who loves sharing with other artists.

Gentlemen in tuxedos
Wednesday, December 15 is the long awaited concert. The sound of an aircraft
sonic boom without downtime, eclectic and joyful celebration
Music. For nearly two hours, the group and collaborators
premises showed incredible range, the nuances
extravagant. aPAtT rubbed to pop, the grind, to Brazilian music,
the sludge, funk and more. After a noisy moment of Hell
Luminocolor Manu HOZ of Free and Zoon, the group is quiet
harmonize with the Crick-Sicks, strange and timeless appearance of thirteen
gentleman in a tuxedo. The manly voice of the choir and venerable coupled
the music of the English sound like a grand finale to the evening. But the
group does not abandon us and continues to play again and again. The
audience screams. Unable to sit still. It washed out but happy. aPAtT
is above all the joy of invention, the sweat of envy. That you
like? It is normal aPAtT!

insaisissable de Liverpool qui joue de la pop aussi bien que de la musique
contemporaine sous la forme de l’aPAtT Orchestra. Il est impossible de
cataloguer leur musique. Et tant mieux parce que c’est la dernière chose
dont ils ont envie. Ils bouffent à tous les râteliers avec génie. Pour faire
comprendre aux gens qui ne les ont pas vus en concert, on peut seulement
comparer leur démarche à celle d’autres groupes. Ils ont la folie amusante
et parfois potache de Mr Bungle, la soif de création des Mothers of Invention
et la déconstruction intellectuelle des Residents. Ils s’inspirent de tous les
styles pour créer de la musique sans limite aucune. Ils aiment
l’expérimentation mais une chose est sûre : ils font de la pop, dans le sens
le plus large et le plus noble du terme. Vous êtes un peu perdu ? C’est normal,
c’est aPAtT.
Après un premier concert en 2009, aPAtT a été invité une semaine en
décembre dernier pour le nouveau projet de l’Aéronef «BE MY GUEST» : une
résidence offerte à un groupe pour le faire participer à des actions
pédagogiques, des répétitions avec des artistes locaux et enfin à un
concert-création. Un vrai échange musical, plutôt qu’une date dans une
liste interminable de concerts en Europe. Et quand on dit « échange », ce
n’est pas dans le genre « j’ai une guitare et toi un djembé. Viens ! On va
refaire le monde cette nuit sur la plage » – ça, ça mérite juste une bonne
giclée de Napalm – mais plutôt « on va discuter, tu vas apporter ce que tu
sais faire, je vais apporter ce que je sais faire et on va surprendre tout le
monde »

Première étape : l’école primaire Alain Decaux de Vendeville pour enregistrer
avec une soixantaine d’élèves un refrain appris par cœur. La session sera
utilisée pour un morceau de Noël qui sera disponible sur le site internet du
groupe en fin d’année. Dans l’après-midi du 12 décembre, la formation a
joué un set pour les aérokids, un goûter-concert où les parents peuvent
amener leurs enfants et faire découvrir la bonne musique à leur progéniture.
Et le set d’aPAtT était calibré pour que les bambins s’éclatent en sautant
dans tous les sens, tout en étant initiés à tous les genres possibles de
musique. Après un show acoustique au Modjo à Wazemmes, le groupe a
répété avec des formations du cru. Les heureux élus étaient Manu d’H.O.Z,
deux musiciens de Luminocolor, trois cuivres de Zoone Libre et les chœurs
masculins des Crick-Sicks de Tourcoing. Cette dernière rencontre est
sûrement la plus improbable, les très sérieux Crick-sicks étant d’habitude
peu enclins à la musique profane. Emmanuel Dernoncourt, leur président,
témoigne après une répétition de sa voix de baryton : « d’abord on a refusé
le projet, mais notre chef a trouvé que ça pouvait être intéressant pour
rencontrer un autre public. Et il a tellement insisté qu’on y est allé même s’il
n’y avait aucune raison apparente que l’on se rencontre un jour. C’est
passionnant car ils ont des qualités. Ce qu’ils font est très varié, ils jouent de

tous les instruments. C’est formidable ! C’est une expérience, un mélange
merveilleux ». Manu, chanteur guitariste d’H.O.Z, précise : « j’ai été très
impressionné, à la fois par leur travail de composition et par leur polyvalence
musicale. Je pense que cela leur apporte les outils nécessaires à leur folie
créatrice. Ils m’ont guidé et offert des espaces d’expression au sein de leurs
morceaux ». Tous les groupes locaux semblent avoir pris autant de plaisir à
l’expérience qu’aPAtT, qui aime échanger avec d’autres artistes.

Gentlemen en smoking
Mercredi 15 décembre, c’est le concert tant attendu. L’Aéronef retentit d’une
explosion sonique sans temps morts, une célébration éclectique et jouissive
de la Musique. Pendant près de deux heures, le groupe et les collaborateurs
locaux ont montré une palette incroyable, aux nuances les plus
extravagantes. aPAtT s’est frotté à la pop, au grind, à la musique brésilienne,
au sludge, au funk et j’en passe. Après un moment noisy d’enfer avec
Luminocolor, Manu d’H.O.Z et Zoone Libre, le groupe se calme pour
harmoniser avec les Crick-Sicks, apparition étrange et intemporelle de treize
gentlemen en smoking. Les voix viriles et vénérables de la chorale couplées
à la musique des Anglais sonnent comme une apothéose à la soirée. Mais le
groupe ne nous abandonne pas et continue de jouer encore et encore. Le
public crie. Impossible de rester en place. On sort lessivé mais heureux. aPAtT
c’est avant tout de la joie, de l’invention, de la sueur, de l’envie. Ça vous a
plu ? C’est normal c’est aPAtT !

a.P.A.t.T. were recently invited for a week’s residency in L’Aeronef in Lille, France (9th-15th December 2010).

We performed for and recorded sixty school children in Vendeville, played an afternoon show for all ages, played a stripped-down set in a cafe/bar, and got to work with a super selection of local musicians for the final performance on the 15th, including Zoone Libre (a brass jazz trio), Crick Sicks (14 strong male voice choir), Manu from H.O.Z. (energetic screaming and guitarist) and Luminocolor (2-piece laptop and instruments electro-acoustica).

Then we went back to the venue, set up our gear for the week on a nice big stage and met Cedric, our sound guy for the week.

On Saturday we met Crick Sicks, the male voice choir, for our first rehearsals together. What gents! We sang one of our own tracks, as well as adding sounds to one of their songs. Some video footage of us working together can be found here:

Sunday morning treated us to our first rehearsals with Manu and Zoone Libre, whilst Sunday afternoon was our all-ages gig. A swell day!\

a.P.A.t.T. – Been waiting for this one to drop for a while. Upset The Rhythm have a tendency to release music by all my favourite U.K bands with a.P.A.t.T. being no exception, yet I’m relatively underexposed to Peepholes so I get the added bonus of being introduced to a new band too. Cheers lads. The A-side is the Peeps side and, from what I’ve heard so far, I’m digging it. Reminds me a little of A Middle Sex but without the sombre edge they possess and more of a ethereal vibe in it’s place. Lively drums collide with kaleidoscopic synth and vocal ambiance to create vast, mind bending psyche jams with a heavy dose of quirk added to increase the fun-times. They sound like they have as much fun making this music as I’m having listening to it. Pass the lifepipe bro’. Now on to the a.P.A.t.T. side…and fuck me this is a good side of wax! Anyone who has heard a.P.A.t.T. will know they are incredibly talented musicians who specialise in undefinable, genre-hopping madness that seems to have stemmed from an obsession with Beefheart, jazz, Mr. Bungle, extreme forms of metal, Tom Waits, Prince, Punk Rock and all forms of party music. They write crazy shit, they write fun stuff, the write beautiful ballads and that’s just for starters. It’d be possible to write a thesis with the amount of goodness going on here but i’ll try and keep it simple…there’s a fantastic tin-pot jazz effort, a mad country song, some freeform electro-rock stuff, an amazing 70′s style funk-off and, probably their wildest R&B hit ‘Everybody’s Talkin’ which is worth the price tag alone. These guys and girls are an incredibly talented lot and their props are well overdue. Sorry Peepholes, you rule too. x

On Saturday 14th August 2010, inimitable musical magpies a.P.A.t.T. will be performing a specially composed piece at Liverpool’s World Museum, using instruments from the museum’s collection of ancient artefacts.

As part of National Museums Liverpool’s ‘DIY Music Day’, a.P.A.t.T. have been commissioned to compose the piece using instruments from vastly distinct cultures from around the world, combining the sounds to create a pan-global soundscape that will echo through the World Museum’s atrium at various points throughout the day.

On December 8^th 2009, a.P.A.t.T. took over the Bluecoat, Liverpool, to stage a unique version of Terry Riley’s groundbreaking minimalist work, In C.

Known for their widely varied approach to live music events, a.P.A.t.T.’s take on the piece was a time and place-specific event, that saw a 31-strong ensemble spread throughout the Bluecoat’s new wing, with the audience invited to move around the building as the piece was played.

With players drawn from all walks of Liverpool’s music scenes, the ensemble featured a huge variety of instruments – clarinets, a harp, a bassoon, a toy piano, voices, guitars, synthesizers – that gave each locality of the performance its own feel and character. This unique staging – a first for the piece – gave a composition, which is different with every performance, a new dimension: as each audience member took their own path through the building, they were hearing their own unique mix of the music.

The main event was framed by some supporting material: the night was introduced by the University of Liverpool’s head of composition, James Wishart, who introduced some of the concepts of Minimalism and In C in particular to an audience featuring many to whom these ideas were unfamiliar. The ensemble then played two original a.P.A.t.T. compositions, written specifically for the ensemble and making specific use of the undetermined instrumental line-up. The whole evening, meanwhile, was framed by the Bluecoat’s Janek Schaeffer Sound Art exhibition, through which the ensemble was spread for In C.

As well as introducing many of the players (and part of the audience) to a style of music with which they were unfamiliar, the event also had some further reaching effects: musicians who met for the first time through playing in the concert have gone on to collaborate, while the ensemble as a whole is going to continue to work together, with future events already taking shape…

Ahhh The DJX. Yamaha’s most treasured of hip sound machines. Played lovingly by a.P.A.t.T. for many years but then abandoned due to the fact it sounded slightly gash. Song 14 Soulful was even the into to track ‘This little piggy’. Scary was a regular feature of any set… Now played by Trippy he also favors the Scary. One friend told the author of the time he saw a tramp in the street with nothing but a DJX, amazing.

With this in ind I turn my attention to another story a keen friend told of how esteemed act ‘The Residents’ had used one. How I scoffed at the concept . How,  just how could they, one of the best sounding acts use something I bought from Currys for £149 .
